The smartest thing any driver can do is to drive many different types of cars and see which one you enjoy the most. Some cars just fit different people's budgets and driving styles better than others. Renting a race car is the best way to accomplish this. Many companies will rent out cars for testing days and actual races. Keep in mind you will still be responsible for any damage done to the car, but it is better than buying a car.
