Now we're onto some of my favorite types of racing. Maybe some of the most pure, untarnished forms of motorsports. One driver, one car, a stretch of asphalt, and not much else. Some of the events covered here are hill climbs, top speed land racing runs, and open road racing events. The most famous hill climb is Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, CO, but other events exist in many states. The rules are more relaxed and so is the event, but don't be fooled, one mistake and you find yourself rolling down a mountain. Open road races seem to be getting pretty popular, but not many states are willing to shut down a stretch of highway just to race on. Then there's land speed racing such as what is done out on the salt flats. There are other places that these events are held, but many are not well known to the public. The great thing about these types of events are that beyond the required safety rules, you are pretty much unlimited to what you can do. This is where those of us that like to build cars and engines can stretch our skills and imaginations. With the right car you can do some road racing events, hillclimbs, open road races, maybe some autocrossing, and if you want to, some drag racing. That's getting your money's worth out of one car. A full blown drag car isn't good for much of anything else except land speed racing. An oval track car is basically useless on any other type of track. Keep all that in mind when you decide to own your own car.
